Saturday Poem of the Week: Expediency by Rinkly Rimes

This week, for the prompt Lies, Deceptions and Misrepresentations, we read a number of poems about the deceptions of lovers, about terrorism and (of course) politics. We heard a few “confessions”—poems dealing with the lies we tell ourselves. A few gave us metaphors based on nature. Overall, the tone was a bit heavy, even dark—a natural outcome considering the topic. But for this Saturday’s Poem of the Week, I’ve chosen one to make you smile.

Brenda Bryant gives us a heads up that she deals in humor. Her blog—Rinkly Rimes—lives up to the promise embedded in its name. Her poetry incorporates not only meter and rhyme, but also, humor.

The first poem she offered for this week’s prompt speak of deception that seems to be inherent in a political campaign. She employs a bit of irony, a method of humorous or subtly sarcastic expression in which the intended meaning of the words is the opposite of what is stated.

EXPEDIENCY

New South Wales goes to the polls
In another day or two.
And, once again we're pondering
On the false and on the true.
Both sides accuse the other
Of lies, deception and such,
And we, the poor old voters,
Are not assisted much.
I keep hoping for a candidate
Who praises 'the other side',
And doesn't keep parroting the cry
"They lied! They lied! They lied!"
Why not give credit where it's due,
Or copy a policy?
A blanket smear (if there is such a thing!)
Seems devious to me.
Not all politicians are villains;
They start out meaning well,
And then that wretched expediency
Sets them on the road to hell!
They're merely muddling-along, my friends,
Exactly as we are;
If I found one who admitted it,
I'd hitch myself to his star!
