Poem of the Week: Halloween

There were so many delightfully ghoulish posts haunting their way through this week’s Pot Luck! It is filled with surprising tricks and delicious treats. Thank you all poets for your tribute to Halloween. Among the many worthy poems is this Halloween tale with a surprise ending worthy of the night. Read and enjoy Jessica D’Angelo’s Halloween Fright.

Halloween Fright

Four children gathered,
ghost, skeleton, zombie and witch,
phalanxed opposite a neglected front door,
nervous giggles and naughty whispers gurgled in the evening air,
a small hesitant finger pressed the cobwebbed bell,
slow chimes awoke the darkness,
four spirited figures prepared rehearsed parts,
the door opened,
with a creak,
‘Trick or Treat!’
screamed out into the cooling air,
the frail elderly gentleman stood,
bemused,
framed by a rectangle of flickering light,
‘Oh, trick, I think,’
he muttered,
and smiled,
as he levitated 12 inches off the porch floor,
and calmly removed his head,
tucking it under his right arm…
